Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced plans to invest ₹1,100 crore to expand its Kattupalli Shipyard and Modular Fabrication Facility near Chennai, reinforcing its long-term commitment to India’s maritime manufacturing and shipbuilding sector.

The proposed expansion aims to enhance the shipyard’s operational capabilities through the addition of new fabrication and assembly shops, paint and blasting facilities, warehouses, office buildings, residential accommodation, a skill development centre, and greenbelt infrastructure. The project will be developed within L&T’s existing land parcel and is currently awaiting fresh environmental and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) approvals before construction begins.

The investment forms part of L&T’s broader industrial expansion strategy in Tamil Nadu, where the company has also committed investments across data centres and electronics manufacturing. The Kattupalli expansion is expected to help the shipyard move closer to its previously approved shipbuilding and ship repair capacities while strengthening India’s capabilities in defence, commercial shipbuilding, offshore engineering, and marine infrastructure.

Kattupalli Shipyard has emerged as one of India’s key private shipbuilding facilities, supporting both commercial and defence projects. The proposed infrastructure upgrades will improve operational efficiency, increase production capacity, and strengthen the yard’s ability to execute large and complex marine engineering projects.

The expansion underscores L&T’s continued investment in India’s manufacturing ecosystem and aligns with the country’s broader vision of enhancing domestic shipbuilding capabilities, creating skilled employment opportunities, and positioning India as a global maritime manufacturing hub.
