Share State Bank of India (SBI) is accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence across its operations, with the country’s largest lender moving its entire cheque-processing system to AI. The initiative is aimed at reducing manual intervention in repetitive, high-volume back-office processes while improving operational efficiency across the bank. SBI Chairman CS Setty said the bank is extensively deploying AI in areas including fraud prevention, proactive risk management, anti-money laundering and cheque processing. According to Setty, automating cheque processing will release a significant portion of the workforce currently involved in manually handling these activities, allowing employees to focus on more valuable responsibilities. The bank’s approach reflects a broader shift towards using AI to automate repetitive and rule-based work rather than replacing customer-facing roles. Employees freed from manual operational tasks can potentially be redeployed towards functions that require human judgement, problem-solving, customer engagement and more complex decision-making. Beyond workforce productivity, SBI expects wider AI adoption to improve the speed and efficiency of banking operations. Automated processing can help reduce turnaround times, strengthen fraud detection and enhance transaction monitoring, while enabling the bank to manage large volumes of operational activity more efficiently. SBI’s move highlights how artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of core banking operations rather than remaining limited to customer-facing digital services. As financial institutions continue to automate routine processes, the focus is likely to shift towards reskilling employees and creating roles that require higher levels of analytical thinking, technological expertise and human interaction.
