Cognizant has launched its inaugural global OpenAI Codex Hackathon, bringing together 10,000 engineers, architects, and technologists across six Indian cities to accelerate enterprise AI innovation. Hosted under the theme “Engineering the Frontier,” the hackathon marks one of the largest workforce AI engagement initiatives undertaken by a global IT services company and reflects Cognizant’s continued investment in building practical AI capabilities across its talent base.

The hackathon is being conducted simultaneously in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune, Coimbatore, and Kochi, where participants are developing real-world business solutions using OpenAI Codex. Rather than focusing solely on experimentation, the initiative encourages employees to create enterprise-ready AI applications that can solve customer challenges while enhancing software engineering productivity and innovation.

Cognizant plans to scale the initiative significantly by extending participation to more than 50,000 associates, creating a broad network of Codex-certified professionals capable of delivering AI-powered solutions for global clients. The programme is designed to strengthen hands-on AI expertise and help employees integrate frontier AI technologies into day-to-day software development and digital transformation projects.

The OpenAI Codex Hackathon reinforces Cognizant’s long-term commitment to preparing its workforce for the next wave of AI-driven software engineering. Building on its previous Guinness World Record for the world’s largest generative AI hackathon, the company continues to invest in large-scale learning initiatives that equip employees with future-ready skills while accelerating enterprise AI adoption across industries.
