Coal India Appoints Mukesh Choudhary as Interim Director (HR)

Coal India Limited (CIL) has appointed Mukesh Choudhary, Director (Marketing), as the interim Director (Human Resources), entrusting him with the additional charge until a regular HR Director is appointed. The appointment follows the completion of Dr. Vinay Ranjan’s tenure on July 27, 2026, and ensures uninterrupted leadership of the company’s HR function.

Mukesh Choudhary has been serving as Director (Marketing) at Coal India since December 2022. Before joining the Maharatna public sector enterprise, he was Deputy Director General in the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence. A 1996-batch Indian Ordnance Factory Services (IOFS) officer, he also spent more than six years in the Ministry of Coal, where he handled coal production, dispatch, transport logistics, and marketing policy.

A Mechanical Engineering graduate from Engineering College Kota, Choudhary also holds a Master’s in Financial Analysis (MFA) and an MBA. During his career, he has served on the boards of several Coal India subsidiaries and public sector coal companies, bringing extensive experience in governance, operations, and strategic management.

The interim appointment reflects Coal India’s focus on maintaining stability in one of its key leadership functions while the process to appoint a permanent Director (Human Resources) continues. As India’s largest coal producer, the company relies on strong people leadership to support its large workforce and ongoing operational priorities.
