The Indian Express has appointed Nandagopal Rajan as Chief Executive Officer (Digital), marking a significant leadership transition as the organisation sharpens its focus on digital growth and content-led strategy.

Rajan steps into the role after more than 12 years with the organisation, during which he has held multiple leadership positions across editorial and business functions. Most recently, he served as Chief Operating Officer, and earlier as Business Head, playing a key role in shaping the company’s digital operations.

Prior to his business leadership roles, Rajan spent over a decade as Editor – New Media, where he was instrumental in building and scaling the digital presence of The Indian Express and Financial Express digital platforms. His contributions included strengthening integration between print and digital, launching new content formats, and expanding into regional language platforms such as ieMalayalam, ieTamil, and ieBangla.

He also played a crucial role in scaling video content and enhancing audience engagement, particularly during high-impact events like the 2014 general elections.

Before rejoining The Indian Express in 2013, Rajan worked with India Today and Hindustan Times, gaining extensive experience in editorial and technology-driven journalism.

Commenting on his new role, Rajan emphasised the responsibility of leading a content-first organisation, highlighting the importance of credible journalism and audience trust. He acknowledged the vision of leadership, including Anant Goenka and George Varghese, and the collective effort of teams that have built the organisation’s digital foundation.

His elevation comes at a time when digital platforms are central to news consumption, and media organisations are increasingly focused on innovation, audience engagement, and platform expansion. Rajan’s leadership is expected to drive the next phase of growth for The Indian Express Digital, with a continued emphasis on high-quality, credible, and content-led journalism.
